NFU Nominate Andrew George as ‘Farming Champion’

Andrew George nominated for Farmers Weekly Award

Andrew George has been nominated as ‘Farming Champion’ by the National Farmers Union in the Farmers Weekly Awards to be announced in a couple of weeks.

National Farmers Union President, Peter Kendall, announced to Andrew at the Liberal Democrat Conference that he had been nominated by the farmers’ trade body for his work in promoting the interests of British agriculture. And for seeking fair dealing between farmers, producers and the increasingly powerful supermarkets.

Andrew said: “I was surprised and honoured to hear the news. It is an unexpected compliment to have been nominated. I certainly don’t expect to win the award with so many other more worthy nominees. The nomination is honour enough.”

The St Ives MP has long campaigned for farmers to get a fair deal from the supermarkets.

For the past five years, he has chaired the Grocery Market Action Group, which includes the NFU, NFU of Scotland and the Independent Fruit Growers Association, Traidcraft, and many more among its membership.

The GMAG has campaigned successfully to get cross party support for the creation of a new supermarket watchdog to ensure fair dealing in the grocery supply chain. The Coalition Government recently announced its intention to create a Grocery Market Adjudicator within the Office of Fair Trading.
