Local MP, Andrew George, has welcomed news in today’s Budget statement that the long running campaign to offer help for hard pressed local water customers has succeeded.
The Chancellor announced that the Treasury will contribute an annual sum to relieve some of the pressures caused by the highest water bills in the country.
Mr George said: “This is a welcome step forward. It is perhaps appropriate that a Conservative Chancellor should address a problem which was originally created by the last Conservative Government when water services were privatised.
“The Government will soon consult once more on options for the most effective use of the annual Water Bill relief fund. I hope that this necessary consultation will not create unwelcome delay in the roll out of this welcome relief.”
The amount offered will be contained in the Budget papers and is expected to be in the order of £40 million per annum.
