MP for the West Cornwall and Isles of Scilly constituency of St Ives, Andrew George, has welcomed the announcement of a project to bring Superfast Broadband to the Isles of Scilly.
The project is part of a Superfast Cornwall initiative to divert fibre optic cables on the seabed to the Scillies in a £3.7 million scheme to give islanders faster Internet speeds.
Mr George has been pressing for the Scillies to be included in the Superfast Broadband project, including representations to Government Ministers to ensure that the Crown Estates did not impose prohibitive costs for use of the seabed.
It is expected that the first Isles of Scilly customers will be connected during the first half of next year.
Mr George said: “This is wonderful news. It seems that all of the diligent planning and effort to turn the Scillies into the best connected Islands on the planet have finally paid off. This could prove to be transformational for the Islands.”
