Councillor Mario Fonk has told the leader of Conservative led Cornwall Council that he believes the council’s plan to cut 2000 jobs could have a ‘devastating effect on the county’s economy.’
The Penzance, Heamoor and Gulval Councillor said he recognised the council has a hard task balancing the books but that he would like to see more efficiciency savings and jobs going through natural wastage, not savage cuts.
“Council employees are the engine of the council and the council will not be able to deliver all its services without an adequate workforce which means the taxpayer will be shortchanged.
“I urge caution and will be opposing any knee jerk reactions, yes the books must be balanced but everything must be done to protect frontline services, this will not be achieved by cutting 2000 jobs. Let us not forget these employees have given years of dedicated service to the council, they have mouths to feed and mortgages to pay,” said Mario Fonk.
