West Cornwall MP, Andrew George, has welcomed the news that the Carbis Bay Hotel and Spa has secured a £525,000 grant from the Coastal Communities Fund.

Mr George, who supported the creation of the fund in 2011, had urged local organisations in West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to apply to the fund which aims to support the economic development of coastal communities.

He said: “I’m delighted that the Carbis Bay Hotel and Spa has been awarded this grant which will support its beachfront regeneration project. I know many will be pleased that the project intends to contribute to sustainable economic growth.”

The scheme includes plans for a water sports training facility; a base for St Ives pilot gig racing club; the RNLI and Carbis Bay Surf Life Saving Club; a visitor centre with education space for schools, colleges and community use; public toilets and changing rooms; conference and wedding venue, restaurant and community hub. It is anticipated to create over 65 local jobs and will help support a year round economy for the area.

The £525,000 grant was announced as part of the launch of the third round of the Coastal Communities Fund (CCF) programme, which is delivered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of the Government.
