STORM RECOVERY NEWS

Andrew George MP met representatives from Coverack at his Helston surgery yesterday morning/early afternoon to discuss efforts to speed up the restoration of the collapsed road and to make the case for Government assistance for those businesses which have been affected by the storms and the loss of trade caused by damage to the area.

He also visited Newlyn Green in the afternoon to congratulate volunteers who are helping to restore the footpath along the seafront between Newlyn and Penzance – even grabbing a Cornish shovel himself for a while and helping out! He will pop along to the “Rally” at the Green at 5pm today.

In conversation with officials in Government Departments, Mr George has been told that the Government are still awaiting an itemised estimate for the works which need to be undertaken as part of Cornwall Council’s £24 million restoration works. Some of these costs will need to be apportioned to the Department for Transport, others as part of a request to DEFRA and the Environment Agency for the restoration of coastal defences and some to the Department for Communities and Local Government for support.

Mr George said: “I have asked Cornwall Council to ensure that an itemised estimate is forwarded to Government Departments in order that detailed negotiations can commence as soon as possible.”
